Digital SOS with Steven Barlett x Vodafone
Role: Location Sound Recordist
Production Company: Red Studio
Director: Mike Doxford
This was a multi-episode mini documentary filmed in an observational style. The purpose to highlight the strugles of the digital skills gap in small business and promote the free tool that vodafone offers.
This documentary is largely unscripted. We have a small crew and with a two camera setup follow Amelia on day one. Interactions in the gym are guenuine so there is a huge requirement to make quick judgments on who requires radio mic’ing and then to cover on the boom those that are not.
Very often shooing in this kind of format unexpected things occur, you need to be out of shot but also able to get clean dialogue in unexpected moments, often in noise filled environments. Interactions like where her friend commends her efforts and starts to cry were totally unplanned, that friend was just another gym user for all we knew. I also worked closely with Steven so that his appearance was a surprise to Amelia, doing all final checks outside of the gym and also working with his BTS team as he is often wearing another radio mic for his own purposes. Collobarting with his team was a must to ensure everything went smoothly on both side. We then also had a series on scripted on street walk and talks and public vox pops.
