Fender: Make A Scene x English Teacher

Role: Location Sound Recordist
Production Company: Phase Films

This unscripted observational mini doc was shot on location in leeds in one day.
It involved largely radio mics on all of the band. All the dialouge used in the edit was from organic conversation and some more organised sit down setup’s like at the pub. The task was to create an organic fly on the wall type documentary that also featured a performance at the venue at the end of the night.
It was really important to be aware of where cameras were and just being constatntly attentive to changes at a momenets notice. I do enjoy these obversational documentaries and pride myself on being attentive to get “those moments.” Ensuring kit is checked, mic position is reliable and to error check sync and other potential issues. While I could go on all day about the technology, the real key is people skills.

We ultimately are filming them go about their day to day-or something like that and we don’t want to impose, modify their behaviour or be a nuisance. As a sound recordist, I am often very close to talent, affixing mic’s and aware of there changing temperaments so it’s important to be develop a good rapport and be sensitive to their changing moods at all times. The band were a pleasure to work with and excitingly went on to win a mercury prize just some days after we worked together. Power to them!
